Our Name
In the fall of 1985, Original Gravity founder, Mark Allan Kaplan,
traveled to London for the first time and met a sixty-year-old
British postal worker in the Duke of Wellington Pub in Soho. The
postal worker bought Mark a bottle of barley wine and told him that
it had a very good “original gravity.” When asked, the postal worker
explained that the term “Original Gravity” or “OG” referred to the
measure of the potential alcoholic strength of the original
ingredients for brewing beer. He then winked and told Mark
that he should always make sure he was partaking of strong original
gravity. As he spoke these words the man seemed to momentarily
transform from an intoxicated postal worker into a sparkling-eyed
mystic. In that moment, Mark experienced a profound mystical
experience as the phrase “original gravity” blossomed in his mind
into a metaphor for living life to its fullest by being fully
present to that original force that permeates all things. Since that
wondrous encounter, Original Gravity has become the catch phrase for
that profound state of being, which Mark aspires to attain in his
life and to express through his multi-domain lived inquires and
creative expressions.
